The complete local guide
Can you hire a car on Gozo? Yes — and it's the best way to see the island. This is our local family's honest guide to everything you need: licences, minimum age, driving on the left, bringing a car on the ferry, parking and what it costs.
Yes, you can hire a car on Gozo. The island has local car rental companies, and hiring is by far the easiest way to explore — Gozo's beaches, temples and villages are spread out and bus services can be slow and infrequent, especially in the evenings. With Dolmens Garage you do not even need to visit a rental office: we deliver the car free to the Mġarr ferry terminal or your accommodation, and you pay when you pick it up. A quick WhatsApp message is all it takes to book.
If you hold a valid driving licence from your home country (in English or with an official translation) you can drive on Gozo. EU driving licences are accepted without any further requirement. For licences issued outside the EU we recommend carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence, though it is not always required. If you are unsure, send us a message and we will confirm for your specific licence.
With us the minimum age is 21, and you must have held your driving licence for at least one year. If you are travelling with younger drivers in your group, let us know and we will advise.
Most visitors arrive on the passenger ferry from Ċirkewwa (Malta) into Mġarr Harbour on Gozo. You do not need to bring a car across: we meet you at the terminal with your rental so you drive off the moment you land. If you would rather collect at your hotel or villa, we deliver there instead — anywhere on Gozo, free of charge. If you do bring your own car on the ferry, we can arrange the handover at the port too.
Parking is generally easy and mostly free across the island. It gets busier in summer around popular spots like Victoria, Xlendi and Marsalforn — a compact car helps, and we are always happy to share the handiest places to park for wherever you are headed.
Rates depend on the season, how long you rent and the size of car, but ours are among the most competitive on Gozo and always include insurance, unlimited mileage, roadside assistance and free delivery — with no deposit. For an exact figure, see our Gozo car hire prices page or just message us your dates.
